MADAGASCAR, BRITISH INLAND MAIL: SC L8 U, F-VF: 2d blue, great S.O.T.N. cancel. During the Franco-Hova War of 1894-95, postal operations were disrupted in Madagascar. In order to keep mail going from any British merchants and the British vice-consul, a local post service (British Inland Mail) was created. These local issues were affixed to mail, and any letters were sent to Natal. Natal’s stamps were then affixed so letters could continue on to their final destinations. This inland service was only in operation for nine months in 1895.
